Reaction of Baking Soda with Water

If water pH is below 7, then

 NaHCO3 + H2O gives Na+ + HCO3- + H+ + OH- ions which reacts and gives NaOH + H2CO3 (base + acid) which again reacts with each other to give NaOH + CO2 + H2O

In this reaction, solution will be slight warm till CO2 in dissolved condition but ultimately as CO2 leaves solution within few seconds causes solution to cool.

Hence, ultimately temperature of water will decrease at the end of the reaction. (Theoretically)

If we consider pure water,

Then as baking soda is amphoteric in nature, it will not react or dissociate , and no reaction will be there.

So, no change in enthalpy and energy of system.

Hence, there will be no temperature change of water.
